Design the rollback before approving the migration window
A five-part checklist for pilots, acceptance criteria, checkpoints and the decision to return.
A five-part checklist for pilots, acceptance criteria, checkpoints and the decision to return.
A rollback plan is not the sentence “restore from backup if needed.” It is a timed decision path with owners, checkpoints and tested actions.
The pilot should exercise real dependencies and operating controls without creating unacceptable business risk. Define what the pilot must teach the team.
Include application function, data validation, administrator access, monitoring, backup, recovery and user experience at named locations where appropriate.
Document when the team can still return to the prior environment, who makes that decision and which data changes must be reconciled.
Technical recovery and stakeholder communication should use the same severity, ownership and timeline assumptions.
The approved runbook should reflect the actual source and target environments, not a generic template.
Start with workload placement, connectivity, data flows, recovery objectives, migration risk and the full commercial scope.
